Ethan Barnhart Fair Play Classic Fall Tournament
Who is Ethan Barnhart, and Why we have named our tournament after him:
Ethan Barnhart was a graduate of Waynesboro Senior High School Class of 2013. As a young boy he played soccer for the Waynesboro Youth Soccer Association, starting as a young recreational player. With hard work and determination, he eventually progressed to an advanced level. There he trained with his teammates and traveled to tournaments and clinics to sharpen his soccer skills and prepare for a bright soccer future.
During Ethan’s prime playing days he was a superior defensive player, always persistent and quick to thwart any opponents’ attack. More importantly, Ethan always demonstrated unreserved sportsmanship, keeping his emotions in check and treating opponents with the utmost respect, both as a player and referee. His leadership and calm demeanor on the field mirrored his attitude and presence off the field as he was admired and held in high regard by all of his teammates and coaches.
In the spring of his freshman year in high school, Ethan developed a pain in his right hip. After much testing, an MRI revealed Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that originates as a tumor in the bones. Ethan soon underwent 6 months of chemotherapy and 31 treatments of radiation therapy. In the fall of 2010 he announced to his teammates he would no longer be able to play soccer. He was to undergo major surgery which involved having part of his pelvic bone removed from his right hip.
For three years, until his graduation in June of 2013, Ethan continued to support his teammates on the sideline, cheering the team on with his positive perspective, never complaining about his own misfortune. He did this even when undergoing further rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, as his strength would allow. His presence was felt the moment he stepped on the sidelines, and his words of encouragement were heard by everyone. Rain or shine, his steadfast soldier demeanor influenced the team not only on the field, but off the field as well.
In December of 2013, four months after starting college at York College, Ethan lost his life due to complications of the Ewing’s Sarcoma and its treatments. To this day, Ethan’s legacy lives on. The positivity of Ethan’s character has flourished and blessed the lives of many people who carry it with them today.
The Ethan Barnhart Fair Play Fall Tournament is dedicated to Ethan Barnhart, his honorable attitude toward others and the immense show of sportsmanship he demonstrated throughout his life. Our hope is to continue Ethan’s legacy and to communicate the significance of great sportsmanship to all players, coaches, parents, and fans at all levels of play within the soccer community.
